Can You Really Build a Sideboard Without a Table Saw?

Yes. You can build a sideboard without a table saw by cutting plywood with a circular saw and clamped straightedge, joining the cabinet with wooden cleats, and hanging simple plywood doors with no-mortise hinges.

The essentials are surprisingly modest:

  • A properly supported plywood sheet
  • A sharp blade intended for plywood
  • A rigid straightedge or circular-saw guide
  • A drill/driver
  • A dependable square
  • A few clamps
  • Patient, repeatable measuring
  • A willingness to cut the doors only after the cabinet exists

That last point matters. A lot.

Many cabinet problems begin when doors and shelves are cut according to an idealized drawing before the builder knows the cabinet’s actual dimensions. This project works the other way around: build the carcass, square it, attach the back, and then measure the real openings.

The result is a plan that adapts to your materials instead of punishing you because a sheet labeled “¾ inch” is slightly thinner.

Once finished, the cabinet can serve as a dining-room buffet, low living-room sideboard, entryway cabinet, office credenza, record-storage console, or media cabinet.

It is designed for ordinary household storage. It is not engineered as a seat, climbing surface, work platform, or support for unusually heavy equipment.

A beginner project should not be an advanced project with fewer decorations. It should be designed around the places where a new woodworker is most likely to struggle.

That is what makes this sideboard different.

Plywood removes the panel-making problem

Building the cabinet from solid wood would require you to select straight boards, joint their edges, glue them into wide panels, flatten the panels, and account for seasonal movement.

Plywood arrives as a large, relatively stable sheet. Once it is cut accurately, it is ready to become a cabinet side, shelf, door, or divider.

That does not make every step effortless. It simply lets you spend your attention on cabinet construction rather than lumber preparation.

Wooden cleats replace complicated joinery

Cabinets are often assembled with dados, rabbets, dowels, biscuits, confirmat screws, or pocket holes. All of those methods can work beautifully, but they add tools or setup requirements.

This plan uses ordinary 1×2 cleats.

The cleats support the top, bottom, shelves, and center divider while providing broad areas for glue and screws. You are fastening into the face of the plywood instead of trying to place every screw perfectly into a narrow plywood edge.

The cleats remain visible inside the cabinet, but they are simple, strong, repairable, and easy to paint.

A full back quietly corrects the structure

The ¼-inch back panel does far more than close the cabinet.

Before it is installed, the carcass can still shift into a slight parallelogram. Once you square the cabinet and fasten the back around its perimeter, the back locks that rectangular shape in place.

It is one of those details you barely notice after the project is finished—and one of the details doing the most work.

Fixed shelves add strength without extra equipment

Adjustable shelves are useful, but they require precisely aligned shelf-pin holes. Fixed shelves resting on cleats are easier to position and help stabilize the center divider.

You can still leave the shelves unattached if you want them to be removable.

Slab doors keep the challenge under control

Each door is a single piece of plywood. There are no rails, stiles, grooves, floating panels, or multi-part glue-ups.

The doors are cut after the cabinet has been assembled and measured. That sequence turns a potentially stressful operation into a controlled fitting process.

Drawers can wait for the next cabinet

Drawers bring slide clearances, parallel openings, square boxes, matching heights, and accurately spaced fronts into the project.

None of those skills is beyond you. They simply do not all need to be learned at once.

Build a square cabinet with cleanly fitted doors first. You will understand far more about drawer construction after you have seen how a real carcass comes together.

How the Sideboard Is Built

The sideboard has four main assemblies:

  1. A rectangular plywood carcass
  2. A center divider with two fixed shelves
  3. A recessed plinth base
  4. Two inset slab doors

The cabinet itself measures 48 inches wide, 26 inches high, and 15½ inches deep. A 4½-inch-high recessed base brings the finished height to approximately 30½ inches.

The plinth sits roughly two inches inside each end of the cabinet and slightly behind the front edge. That shadow line matters more than it might seem. It prevents the finished piece from looking like a plywood box sitting directly on the floor.

Inside, the center divider creates two equal storage bays. Each bay has one shelf, giving you four practical storage spaces.

Before You Cut Anything, Measure the Plywood

The words “¾-inch plywood” do not guarantee that your sheet measures exactly ¾ inch.

It may be 23/32 inch. It may vary slightly from one product to another. That small difference travels through the entire cabinet, changing the outside width, divider height, shelf fit, and door openings.

The cut list below assumes true ¾-inch material. If your plywood is thinner, calculate the critical dimensions from its actual thickness.

Use these formulas:

  • Top and bottom width: 48″ − twice the side-panel thickness
  • Divider height: 26″ − twice the top-and-bottom thickness
  • Opening width: (inside cabinet width − divider thickness) ÷ 2
  • Shelf width: smallest opening width − ¼″
  • Door width: smallest opening width − ¼″
  • Door height: smallest opening height − ¼″

Suppose the completed opening measures 22⅞ inches wide. Subtracting ¼ inch gives you a 22⅝-inch inset door, leaving a nominal ⅛-inch gap on each side.

The formulas get you close. The assembled cabinet gives you the truth.

Do not cut the shelves or doors to final size until the carcass has been assembled, squared, and fitted with its back.

Materials You Will Need

Sheet goods

  • Two 4′ × 8′ sheets of ¾″ furniture-grade plywood
  • One 48″ × 48″ project panel of ¼″ plywood or hardboard for the back

The project does not consume every inch of the second ¾-inch sheet. The remaining material is useful for test cuts, finishing samples, templates, repairs, and future small projects.

Solid wood

  • Three 1×2 boards, 8 feet long, for cleats and door stops
  • One short 2×2 board for the plinth blocks

These are nominal lumber sizes. A typical 1×2 measures approximately ¾ × 1½ inches. A typical 2×2 is approximately 1½ inches square.

Hardware and fasteners

  • Six no-mortise hinges made for inset cabinet doors
  • Two cabinet pulls or knobs
  • Two magnetic door catches
  • #8 × 1¼″ wood screws
  • #8 × 2″ wood screws
  • #6 × ¾″ screws for attaching the back

Choose your hinges before cutting the doors. Different hinges can require slightly different edge gaps or mounting clearances.

The Tools That Matter—and the Ones You Can Skip

A table saw is not hiding in the fine print. Neither is a router.

You do, however, need a cutting setup you can trust. Accuracy here comes from the relationship between the circular saw, its blade, the guide, and the support under the plywood.

A commercial guide can make long, repeatable cuts easier, especially when you are still learning how a circular saw behaves. Straightedge systems are specifically designed to guide saws through sheet goods such as plywood.

You can also use a straight plywood offcut or another genuinely rigid reference edge. It must be securely clamped and offset correctly from the blade.

Choosing Plywood You Won’t Regret Halfway Through the Build

A clean cut cannot straighten a bowed panel.

Lay your eye along the sheet before buying it. Look for twist, lifted veneer, damaged corners, deep patches, surface ripples, and visible voids along the edges.

Flatness comes first. Appearance comes next.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is a natural fit for a clear-coated or lightly stained sideboard. The face is usually smooth, and matching birch edge banding is easy to find.

Oak plywood

Oak plywood brings stronger grain and a more traditional furniture appearance. It accepts stain, although the thin face veneer may color differently from solid oak edging or trim.

Always test the entire finishing schedule on an offcut.

Sanded plywood

Sanded plywood is often a sensible choice for painted furniture. Inspect each sheet rather than trusting the grade label alone. Patches and edge voids may require filling before paint.

MDF

MDF is extremely flat and can produce a beautiful painted surface. It is also heavy, vulnerable to moisture, and unpleasantly dusty to cut.

Its edges absorb finish quickly and must be sealed carefully. For a first large cabinet, plywood is generally easier to move and handle.

Construction plywood and OSB

Construction sheathing can be used for shop cabinets or deliberately rugged furniture, but it is rarely the easiest route to a refined indoor sideboard.

The faces require more work, and exposed voids may appear exactly where you do not want them. Panel selection should reflect strength, stiffness, stability, and the surface quality demanded by the finished project—factors also emphasized by the APA Engineered Wood Association.

Set Up the Circular Saw Before the Plywood Is Under It

This is the quiet part of the project. Nothing looks finished yet. There is no satisfying cabinet shape beginning to appear.

But accuracy is being decided here.

Start with the manual

Circular saw controls, guard systems, blade orientation, battery procedures, and depth settings vary by model. Read the instructions supplied by your saw’s manufacturer and use only an approved blade size.

Never tie back, remove, or disable the blade guard. Portable circular saws are designed to cut with the upper and lower guards functioning. OSHA’s handheld-saw guidance also stresses proper blades, functional guarding, sharp cutting edges, and eye protection.

Support the entire sheet

A 4×8 sheet is large enough to become unpredictable when an unsupported offcut begins to fall.

Set the plywood on a rigid-foam insulation panel or a series of evenly positioned supports. Both sides of the cut should remain stable from the beginning of the pass to the end.

Make certain the blade cannot contact concrete, screws, the workbench, or a sawhorse below the sheet.

Set the blade depth according to the manufacturer’s guidance

The blade should not hang unnecessarily far below the plywood. Follow the instructions for your particular saw and cutting setup.

Think about where your body and cord will go

If you use a corded saw, route the cable behind you before starting. Keep it away from the blade and the guide.

Stand comfortably to the side of the projected cutting path. Let the saw reach full speed before it enters the plywood. At the end of the cut, release the trigger and wait for the blade to stop before putting the tool down.

Install a suitable plywood blade

A sharp, fine-tooth carbide blade generally leaves a cleaner edge than a coarse framing blade.

Make a test cut to learn which face of the plywood receives the cleanest result with your saw. Blade direction and saw orientation influence where splintering appears.

Find the blade offset

The edge of the saw’s base plate does not sit on the cut line. The blade is a fixed distance away from the edge of the shoe that rides against the guide.

Measure that distance carefully.

If the blade is 1⅜ inches from the guide-side edge of the shoe, the straightedge must be clamped 1⅜ inches away from the desired cut line.

Make a test cut and measure the result. If you change blades, guide orientation, or bevel settings, check the offset again.

How to Get Furniture-Quality Cuts From a Circular Saw

The goal is not simply to cut every part close to the listed dimensions. Matching parts need to match one another.

Two side panels that differ by ⅛ inch may each look acceptable on the floor. Once assembled, that difference can twist the cabinet and turn door fitting into a battle.

Rough-cut first, finish-cut second

Breaking a full sheet into smaller sections makes the final cuts less awkward.

Leave approximately ¼ inch of extra material during the rough cut. Once the piece is easier to support and position, trim it to its final dimension.

Establish a trustworthy reference edge

Factory edges are often straight, but “often” is not the standard you want to build around.

Check the edge against your guide or another known-straight reference. Mark one reliable edge on each panel and take later measurements from it.

Treat matching pieces as pairs

Cut the side panels using the same guide setup whenever possible. Do the same for the top and bottom.

If your saw and support setup safely allow it, two rough-cut blanks can be aligned and trimmed together. Otherwise, use the first finished panel to position the guide consistently for the second.

Do not trace one panel and then follow the line freehand.

Mark the waste

Draw an “X” on the waste side of every line. Position the blade kerf on that side.

It feels almost too simple to mention—until the first time a perfect-looking cut produces a part one blade-width too narrow.

Label as you go

Mark each part on a hidden face:

  • Left side
  • Right side
  • Top
  • Bottom
  • Divider
  • Left shelf
  • Right shelf
  • Left door
  • Right door

Mark the preferred face and front edge too. Once several similar plywood rectangles are leaning against a wall, memory becomes unreliable very quickly.

Step 1: Cut the Cabinet Carcass

Start with the large structural parts:

  • Two sides at 26 × 15½ inches
  • One top at 46½ × 15½ inches
  • One bottom at 46½ × 15½ inches
  • One center divider at 24½ × 15½ inches

Leave the doors alone for now.

Place the side panels together and run your fingers along their edges. The height and depth should match. Repeat the check with the top and bottom.

If one matching panel is slightly oversized, clamp the pair together and trim them with one guided pass. A matching pair is more valuable than two theoretically perfect measurements that disagree with each other.

Check that every panel is square

Measure diagonally between opposite corners. Then measure the other diagonal.

Equal diagonal measurements indicate that the panel is square. If the measurements differ, correct the panel before assembly. Otherwise, the error becomes part of the cabinet.

Step 2: Sand the Inside While Everything Is Still Flat

There is an ease to sanding a panel on a work surface that disappears the moment it becomes the inside corner of a cabinet.

Take advantage of that.

Sand the visible interior faces with 120-grit where needed, followed by 180-grit. Work carefully near decorative veneer; it may be much thinner than it appears.

Lightly soften sharp edges, but leave front edges crisp if you plan to apply veneer edge banding.

Vacuum the dust and wipe the surfaces clean.

You can apply an initial clear coat to the interior before assembly if that suits your finishing plan. Keep finish away from glue joints. Wood glue needs bare, clean wood to bond properly.

Step 3: Position the Top and Bottom Cleats

Lay the left side panel flat with its interior face upward.

Take an offcut from the actual cabinet plywood and use it as a spacer.

At the top edge, place the spacer flush with the panel and position a 14½-inch cleat immediately below it. At the bottom, place the spacer against the lower edge and position another cleat immediately above it.

Center each cleat from front to back, leaving approximately ½ inch of space at both ends.

Place the 1½-inch face of the 1×2 against the side panel. The cleat should project approximately ¾ inch into the cabinet.

Apply a thin layer of glue. Clamp the cleat. Predrill the screw holes and attach it with #8 × 1¼-inch screws.

Mark your drill bit with tape or use a depth stop. Breaking through the outside face at this stage is a painful way to discover that the pilot hole was too deep.

Repeat the process on the right side panel.

Why the scrap spacer works so well

The spacer represents the real thickness of the top and bottom panels. It positions every cleat from the material itself rather than from a nominal measurement printed on a store label.

That small decision removes four separate opportunities for measuring error.

Step 4: Lay Out the Center Divider

Place the top and bottom panels next to one another with their interior faces upward.

With 46½-inch-wide panels and a ¾-inch divider:

  • Mark the center at 23¼ inches
  • Mark one line ⅜ inch to the left
  • Mark another ⅜ inch to the right

The divider sits between those outer lines.

Place one 14½-inch cleat beside the divider position on the bottom panel. Install its matching cleat on the underside of the top panel, facing the same storage compartment.

Orient each divider cleat so its narrow ¾-inch edge rests on the top or bottom panel and its 1½-inch face will sit against the divider.

Glue, predrill, and attach each cleat to its panel with #8 × 2-inch screws driven through the cleat height.

Later, shorter 1¼-inch screws will pass horizontally through the cleats and into the divider.

Step 5: Watch the Plywood Become a Cabinet

This is where the stack of flat parts begins to stand up and occupy space. Work slowly. A second pair of hands is useful, but clamps and temporary blocks can do the job too.

Connect the bottom to the left side

Stand the left side panel on edge. Fit the bottom panel against the lower cleat, keeping its front and rear edges flush with the side.

Clamp it. Check the corner with a square.

Predrill through the cleat and into the bottom. Fasten it with #8 × 2-inch screws.

Add the top

Position the top panel against the upper cleat. Its outer surface should sit flush with the top edge of the side panel.

Clamp it, check the corner, predrill, and fasten through the cleat.

Fit the center divider

Slide the divider between the top and bottom. Bring it firmly against both divider cleats.

Check that its front edge is flush with the cabinet front and that it stands vertically. Drive #8 × 1¼-inch screws horizontally through the cleats and into the divider.

Close the box with the right side

Position the right side over the exposed ends of the top and bottom. The two panels should fit into the spaces created by the right-side cleats.

Clamp the assembly before driving anything.

Check the corners. Confirm that the front edges align. Predrill and fasten the top and bottom through their cleats.

The structure now looks like a cabinet. It may not yet be a square cabinet.

Step 6: Square It Before the Shape Becomes Permanent

Measure from the upper-left corner to the lower-right corner. Write down the number.

Now measure from the upper-right corner to the lower-left.

If the numbers match, the carcass is square. If they do not, push gently across the longer diagonal and measure again.

Continue until the measurements agree as closely as practical.

Then look beyond the diagonals:

  • Are the top and bottom parallel?
  • Are the sides parallel?
  • Is the divider vertical?
  • Are the front edges flush?
  • Does the cabinet sit without rocking?
  • Do both openings look rectangular?

This is not fussy perfectionism. Door gaps will reveal errors that the unfinished cabinet is currently hiding.

Step 7: Let the Back Lock Everything in Place

Measure the completed cabinet’s outside height and width. Cut the ¼-inch back to those dimensions rather than assuming the original numbers survived every cut and joint unchanged.

Lay the cabinet face down on a protected flat surface. Position the back panel and align its edges.

Before inserting the first screw, measure the cabinet diagonals one more time.

Predrill and attach the back with #6 × ¾-inch screws spaced approximately 6–8 inches apart around the perimeter. Add screws through the back and into the center divider.

Keep fasteners away from fragile plywood edges. If the screw heads are small enough to damage the back material, use washers.

What if the back fits three corners but misses the fourth?

Pause before trimming it.

A rectangular back panel that refuses to align with all four corners often means the cabinet has slipped out of square. Recheck the diagonals and correct the carcass before changing the back.

Once attached, that thin panel becomes a broad structural brace.

Step 8: Give Each Storage Bay a Shelf

For approximately equal upper and lower spaces, position the bottom surface of each ¾-inch shelf 11⅞ inches above the interior face of the cabinet bottom.

Cut a scrap spacer to 11⅞ inches. Stand it inside the first compartment and rest the shelf cleat on top.

Install four 14-inch cleats:

  • One on the left cabinet side
  • One on each side of the center divider
  • One on the right cabinet side

Set them slightly behind the front edge so they cannot interfere with the inset doors.

Attach each cleat with glue and #8 × 1¼-inch screws. Predrill every hole and watch the depth.

Now measure the actual width of each storage bay at shelf height. Subtract approximately ¼ inch from the smallest measurement.

Cut the shelves approximately 14½ inches deep. This keeps them behind the front edge and leaves a little breathing room near the back.

Set the shelves on the cleats.

You can leave them removable or drive short screws upward through the cleats to hold them permanently. Permanent shelves add stiffness. Loose shelves are easier to remove for finishing or later modification.

Step 9: Build the Recessed Plinth

The base is a shallow plywood frame approximately 44 inches wide and 13 inches deep.

Cut:

  • Two pieces at 44 × 4½ inches for the front and back
  • Two pieces at 11½ × 4½ inches for the ends
  • One piece at 11½ × 4½ inches for the center stretcher

The end pieces fit between the long front and back pieces.

Assemble the outside frame

Place a 2×2 block inside each corner. Add glue where the plywood parts meet.

Predrill through the plywood and into the blocks. Attach the corners with #8 × 2-inch screws.

The heads will appear on the outside of the plinth, but the entire base is recessed beneath the cabinet. Countersink and fill them before painting.

Add the center support

Install the center stretcher halfway along the plinth. Use the two remaining 2×2 blocks to connect it to the front and back.

This support reduces flex in the long plinth rails and provides another attachment point under the cabinet.

Center the plinth under the carcass

Turn the cabinet upside down on a blanket or protected work surface.

Position the base:

  • Approximately 2 inches in from both ends
  • Approximately 1¼ inches behind the cabinet front
  • Approximately 1¼ inches ahead of the back

Check that the base runs parallel with the cabinet.

Drive screws from inside the cabinet, through the bottom, and into the 2×2 plinth blocks. Choose a length that penetrates the blocks securely without breaking through the visible base.

You can add glue if you want a permanent connection. Leave it dry if you might replace the plinth with furniture legs later.

Step 10: Cut the Doors to the Cabinet You Actually Built

The planned door size is approximately 22⅝ × 24¼ inches. Your openings may tell you something slightly different.

Measure the first opening across the top, center, and bottom. Then measure its height at the left, center, and right.

Use the smallest width and smallest height.

Subtract ¼ inch from each measurement. That creates a nominal ⅛-inch gap around all four edges.

Measure the second compartment independently. Even a carefully built cabinet can produce two openings that differ by a fraction.

Sneak up on the final size

If you are uncertain about the guide position, leave the doors slightly oversized on the first pass. Trim them to final dimensions after testing the setup.

Repeated circular-saw cuts take time

A table saw makes repeated rips efficient. With a circular saw, every guide position must be measured, offset, clamped, and checked.

You exchange speed for accessibility. For a one-off piece of furniture, that can be a very reasonable trade.

Inset doors do not hide uneven openings

Overlay doors cover the cabinet edges. Inset doors reveal the space around them.

Squaring the carcass and measuring each opening after the back is installed keeps that challenge manageable.

Fixed shelves reduce flexibility

Fixed shelves are simple and stiff. They are not as adaptable as shelf pins.

If your storage needs are likely to change, leave the shelves loose on their cleats or replace the cleats with accurately drilled shelf-pin holes.

What If You Own Only Two Clamps?

Then you use them deliberately.

Attach one cleat at a time. Use scrap blocks to support panels. Let important glue joints develop strength before loading them. Use painter’s tape to stop smaller parts from sliding.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Position one cleat
  2. Clamp it
  3. Predrill the holes
  4. Drive the screws
  5. Remove the clamps
  6. Move to the next cleat

Once the screws are installed, they hold the joint mechanically while the glue cures.

Do not try to replace missing clamps by overtightening screws. That can pull the parts out of alignment, crush the plywood surface, or strip the hole.

When a Cut Wanders Away From the Guide

A wandering circular-saw cut usually points to one of four things:

  • The guide moved
  • The saw shoe lifted
  • The blade was forced sideways
  • The cut was attempted freehand

If the panel is still oversized, reset the guide and make a shallow corrective pass.

If the piece is now too narrow, do not throw it away immediately. It may become a shelf, divider, plinth rail, test piece, or template.

Before the next cut:

  • Clamp both ends of the guide
  • Confirm the blade offset
  • Support the plywood completely

When Matching Panels Don’t Quite Match

If both are still large enough, clamp them as a pair and trim them in a single guided cut. If the difference is too small to justify another pass, place the best-matching edges at the visible front and let a minor discrepancy fall toward the back.

Furniture often looks precise because the visible relationships are controlled—not because every concealed edge is mathematically flawless.

When the Cabinet Refuses to Sit Square

Loosen the necessary screws slightly. Push across the longer diagonal. Measure again.

Do not attach the back until the diagonal measurements agree.

Once the back is fastened, it will resist the exact movement you are currently trying to make.

When a Screw Appears on the Outside Face

Stop and inspect the screw length, pilot-hole depth, and cleat orientation before continuing.

Could You Replace the Circular Saw With a Jigsaw?

How to Change the Width Without Redesigning Everything

The width can be changed more easily than the height or depth.
