The short version

Why This One-Sheet Design Looks Like Real Furniture

A storage chest is one of the simplest pieces of furniture you can build. It is also one of the easiest to make look heavy and unfinished.

Large flat panels can feel bulky. Exposed screws pull the eye toward the construction instead of the design. A box placed directly on the floor often resembles workshop storage, no matter how carefully it was assembled.

This plan quietly solves those problems.

The front and back overlap the end panels, producing a clean rectangular carcass with minimal visual interruption. The lid extends roughly half an inch past each side, forming a controlled shadow line and giving your fingers enough room to lift it.

Then there is the base.

It is smaller than the chest body and recessed from every visible edge. From normal standing height, the base nearly disappears into shadow. The chest seems to hover slightly above the floor, making it look lighter, narrower, and more deliberate.

The clever part is that the body, lid, bottom, supports, cleats, and recessed base can all come from the same sheet.

“One sheet” refers to the plywood used for the project. You will still need screws, glue, hinges, lid supports, sandpaper, edge treatment, and a suitable finish.

Finished Dimensions: Large Enough to Matter, Small Enough to Fit

The exact interior height depends on where you place the bottom supports and how much clearance your lid hardware requires.

These proportions provide meaningful storage without allowing the chest to dominate a small room. It is wide enough for folded blankets and awkward toys, yet shallow enough that smaller objects do not disappear into an unreachable cavern.

The proportions are doing more work than you think

Modern furniture tends to rely on geometry rather than decoration. Straight lines, consistent reveals, subtle overhangs, and carefully controlled visual weight replace applied molding and ornamental hardware.

Three details give this chest its contemporary profile:

  1. Its width is more than twice its body height, emphasizing a low horizontal line.
  2. The recessed base creates a dark break between the chest and the floor.
  3. The lid overhang is narrow enough to look intentional rather than oversized.

You can certainly add decorative straps, wide trim, corner posts, or a deeply overhanging top. Just know that every added detail moves the chest away from minimalist furniture and closer to a farmhouse trunk or traditional hope chest.

Choosing the Right Plywood

One sheet is all you need, but it needs to be the right sheet.

Use a full 48-by-96-inch panel of 3/4-inch plywood. Look across its face before buying it. Sight down the length to check for bowing, inspect the corners for damage, and examine both faces under good light.

Birch plywood

Birch is an excellent choice for a pale Scandinavian-style chest. Its subtle grain works with clear finishes, muted stains, and soft neutral interiors.

Maple plywood

Maple offers an even, understated surface. It can look exceptionally clean under a water-based clear finish, although some maple veneers can react unpredictably to stain.

Oak plywood

Oak brings stronger grain and more visible texture. It is useful when you want the chest to feel warmer or more traditional without adding decorative trim.

Walnut-veneered plywood

Walnut provides the darkest and most immediately luxurious result. Paired with a black recessed base and restrained hardware, it creates a convincing mid-century appearance.

Sanded pine or paint-grade plywood

What to avoid

The cheapest construction sheathing may be tempting, especially for a first project. Unfortunately, it often contains face patches, core voids, rough grain, damaged corners, and internal gaps that reveal themselves the moment you cut an exposed edge.

It can still work for a rugged painted chest. It is rarely the easiest route to polished furniture.

Plywood sold as 3/4 inch may also be slightly thinner than its nominal dimension. Measure the actual sheet before cutting any fitted components.

Hardware and Supplies

Along with the plywood, gather:

  • Wood glue
  • 1 1/4-inch coarse-thread pocket-hole screws, if using pocket joinery
  • Suitable wood screws for the cleat method
  • One continuous piano hinge or several properly sized individual hinges
  • One or two soft-close lid supports rated for the completed lid
  • Sandpaper in approximately 120-, 150-, and 180- or 220-grit
  • Wood filler or color-matched putty

  • Paint, clear finish, hardwax oil, or water-based polyurethane

Choose lid supports with numbers, not guesswork

Lid supports are easy to underestimate because they are physically small. Yet their job is to control a broad plywood panel moving through an arc directly above someone’s hands.

Manufacturers may rate their hardware according to lid weight, lid depth, torque, mounting position, or a combination of these factors.

A 37-by-17-inch plywood lid will often weigh somewhere around 9 to 12 pounds, depending on the plywood core, veneer species, edging, and finish. Do not rely on that estimate when selecting hardware. Weigh the completed lid and follow the manufacturer’s sizing method.

A lid support that is too weak may allow the lid to fall. One that is too strong can make the chest difficult to close or place unnecessary strain on the hinge and mounting screws.

The Tools You Actually Need

You do not need every machine in a professional cabinet shop.

Essential tools

The practical minimum is:

  • Circular saw
  • Straightedge or saw guide
  • Drill and driver
  • Countersink bit
  • Tape measure
  • Combination square
  • Pencil or marking knife
  • Clamps
  • Random-orbit sander
  • Eye protection
  • Hearing protection
  • Appropriate dust protection

Helpful tools, if you already own them

These can make the work faster or more precise:

  • Track saw
  • Table saw
  • Pocket-hole jig
  • Router with a small round-over bit
  • Jigsaw
  • Brad nailer
  • Edge-banding trimmer
  • Shop vacuum or dust extractor

No table saw? That is not a problem

A circular saw and a reliable straightedge can make every straight cut in this project.

Lay the plywood over a sacrificial foam insulation sheet or a set of straight supporting boards. Adjust the blade so it extends only slightly below the plywood. Measure the distance from the saw blade to the edge of the saw’s base, then offset your guide by that amount.

Do not discover an offset error on the finished lid. Make a test cut first.

The bottom is intentionally undersized by approximately 1/8 inch in each direction. That slight clearance allows it to fit inside the assembled chest even if the plywood is not exactly 3/4 inch thick or the carcass ends up marginally out of square.

Do not make the bottom panel’s final cut until you can measure the assembled opening.

Three Ways to Join the Chest

The cut list includes enough material for internal cleats, but you will not need them if you use pocket-hole joinery.

Pocket holes: clean and beginner-friendly

Pocket holes keep the fasteners inside the chest and allow the outer surfaces to remain uninterrupted.

They are quick, strong enough for this application when properly executed, and relatively forgiving. The drawback is obvious: you need a pocket-hole jig.

Internal cleats: simple tools, hidden fasteners

With this method, narrow plywood strips are fastened inside the corners. The front, back, and end panels attach to the cleats rather than being screwed directly into one another’s edges.

You can build the entire chest this way with a drill and circular saw. The cleats remain visible inside, although they are easy to paint or incorporate into the interior design.

Exterior screws: direct but less discreet

You can also glue the joints and drive countersunk screws through the front and back into the edges of the end panels.

This is straightforward, but it comes with compromises:

  • The screw holes must be filled.
  • Screws driven into plywood edges have limited holding power.
  • A poorly aligned screw can emerge through the inside face.
  • Filled holes may remain visible beneath clear finish.

If you choose this route, predrill carefully and treat the glue—not the screws—as the heart of the joint.

Laying Out the Full Plywood Sheet

A full sheet is awkward. It becomes much easier to handle once it is divided into three long strips.

A practical layout is:

  1. Cut one 17-inch-wide strip along the 96-inch length.
  2. Cut one 15-inch-wide strip from the remaining sheet.
  3. Keep the final strip, approximately 16 inches wide, for the end panels and smaller components.

From the 17-inch strip:

  • Cut the 37-by-17-inch lid.
  • Cut the bottom panel from the remaining section.
  • Reserve the remaining material for cleats, supports, base parts, or test pieces.

From the 15-inch strip:

  • Cut two 36-by-15-inch panels for the front and back.
  • Use the remaining 24-inch section for one end panel or smaller parts.

From the final strip:

  • Cut the second end panel.
  • Rip the long strips required for the recessed base, bottom supports, corner cleats, and attachment blocks.

The layout provides comfortable material allowance, but the saw blade removes wood with every pass. That missing strip—the kerf—has a way of ruining an otherwise perfect cutting plan.

Draw each cut before starting. Leave physical space between neighboring parts for the kerf instead of placing their measurement lines directly against one another.

Break the sheet down before chasing precision

Do not wrestle a full 4-by-8-foot sheet through a delicate final cut if you can avoid it.

First, break it into manageable sections. Then trim those sections to their exact dimensions. The smaller pieces are easier to support, measure, and guide without drifting away from the saw fence or straightedge.

Cut one finished panel. Measure it. Only then should you duplicate it.

Keeping the Veneer Intact

The first pass of the saw reveals what kind of plywood you brought home.

A clean blade leaves a crisp line. A coarse or dull blade can lift the veneer in ragged splinters, particularly at the end of a cut. That damage may be impossible to hide beneath a clear finish.

For cleaner cuts:

  • Use a sharp fine-tooth plywood or finish blade.
  • Support the sheet across the entire cutting area.
  • Orient the best face correctly for the type of saw being used.
  • Score fragile veneer lightly with a sharp knife.
  • Test painter’s tape over the cut line on an offcut.
  • Keep the saw’s base flat against the plywood.
  • Let the blade work rather than forcing it forward.
  • Consider a shallow scoring pass before cutting to full depth.

A track saw with a splinter guard is convenient, but it is not magic. Careful setup matters more than owning the most expensive saw.

Step 1: Cut, Match, and Label the Main Panels

Begin with the front and back. Cut the first 36-by-15-inch panel, check its corners, and measure it in several places.

Once it is correct, cut the matching panel using the same setup.

The two pieces need to be genuinely identical. A difference that seems insignificant on the cutting table can twist the chest during assembly or leave one end sitting proud of the opposite panel.

Cut the two 14 1/2-by-15-inch end panels next.

Because the front and back overlap the end-panel edges, the completed exterior depth is:14.5+0.75+0.75=16 inches

Write on the faces that will eventually point inward:

  • Front
  • Back
  • Left end
  • Right end
  • Bottom
  • Lid

Mark the top edge of every body panel as well. These notes will disappear inside the finished chest, but they prevent grain direction, pocket holes, or carefully chosen faces from ending up upside down.

Pause here for the first dry fit

Stand the four body panels together without glue.

The front and back should match. The ends should disappear neatly between them. The grain should move in the direction you intended, and the best faces should point outward.

If anything is wrong, this is the inexpensive moment to find it.

Step 2: Prepare the Joinery

If you are using pocket holes

Drill pocket holes along both vertical edges of each end panel. Keep the first and last holes a comfortable distance from the corners, then space the remaining holes evenly.

Set the jig for the plywood’s actual thickness, not merely the number printed on the store label. Use the screw size recommended by the jig manufacturer.

Coarse-thread pocket screws are generally suitable for plywood cores. Fine-thread screws are intended for denser hardwoods.

Drill slowly enough to clear the chips. A clogged bit creates heat and ragged pockets.

If you are using internal corner cleats

Cut four cleats approximately 13 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide.

Attach them vertically to the inside faces of the front and back. Set each cleat back from the panel end by the actual thickness of the adjoining end panel.

This setback matters. Too shallow and the end panel protrudes. Too deep and a groove appears at the corner.

Predrill the cleats before adding screws. Narrow plywood strips can split or delaminate when a screw is driven near an edge without a pilot hole.

Step 3: Bring the Carcass Together

Lay the front panel flat with its inside face upward. Position the two end panels and check their orientation one more time.

Apply a thin, continuous bead of wood glue to the mating edges. More glue is not stronger; it simply creates more squeeze-out.

Bring the parts together and tighten the clamps lightly. Add the back panel, then fasten the joints with pocket screws or through the internal cleats.

At this point, the structure may look square while still leaning slightly into a parallelogram. The eye is not precise enough to settle the question.

Measure the diagonals:

  • Front-left corner to back-right corner
  • Front-right corner to back-left corner

If the two measurements match, the carcass is square. If one diagonal is longer, press those two corners toward each other until the measurements agree.

Only then should you fully tighten the clamps.

Remove wet glue from visible surfaces. Pay particular attention if you intend to stain or clear-finish the plywood. Dried glue blocks finish penetration and often reveals itself later as a pale, stubborn patch.

Do not bury the screws

Tighten each screw until the joint closes firmly. Then stop.

Continuing to drive a pocket screw after the joint has seated can strip the plywood core or pull the head too deeply into the pocket. More torque does not create more strength once the material has begun to fail.

Step 4: Give the Bottom Somewhere Solid to Sit

The bottom panel should rest on four supports rather than hanging from screws driven into its edges.

Cut:

  • Two 33-by-1 1/2-inch supports
  • Two 13-by-1 1/2-inch supports

Install them around the lower inside perimeter of the carcass. Position the bottom edges of the supports flush with the bottom edges of the chest walls. Their upper edges will sit approximately 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of the body.

That becomes the ledge for the bottom panel.

Use glue and carefully sized screws. Predrill the holes, countersink them lightly, and make certain the screw points cannot emerge through the exterior face.

Check the supports with a straightedge before the glue sets. If one sits higher than the others, the bottom will rock.

Now measure the opening. Trim the bottom panel to fit with a small, even clearance around its edges. The nominal plan dimension is 34 3/8 by 14 3/8 inches, but the actual opening should decide the final cut.

Set the panel onto the supports and fasten it from above.

What if you want to store something heavy?

A supported 3/4-inch plywood bottom is suitable for ordinary household storage. Blankets, toys, games, and bedding should not present an unusual challenge when the chest is properly built.

Books, tools, exercise weights, and other dense objects are different. They concentrate more load into the same area.

Add a central support beneath the bottom if heavy contents are likely. The strength of the completed chest depends on the plywood core, unsupported span, support placement, fasteners, glue joints, and actual load. It should not be treated as a certified load-bearing container.

Step 5: Build the Base That Almost Disappears

The recessed base is a simple rectangular frame:

  • Two pieces at 32 by 3 inches
  • Two pieces at 10 1/2 by 3 inches

Place the shorter pieces between the longer ones. With 3/4-inch plywood, the completed base measures approximately 32 by 12 inches:10.5+0.75+0.75=12 inches

Join the frame with glue and pocket screws, countersunk screws, or small internal blocks. Measure its diagonals before the glue cures.

Center the base under the chest. The setback should be approximately:

  • 2 inches from the left and right ends
  • 2 inches from the front and back

Do not trust your eye here. If the base is even slightly off-center, the shadow beneath the chest will be wider on one side than the other.

Add small attachment blocks inside the base if needed. Drive screws through the chest bottom into those blocks, using a length that cannot penetrate a visible surface.

Once the chest is upright, step back.

The base will not demand attention. That is precisely why it works. Its job is to create a thin seam of darkness under the body, breaking the visual connection between the box and the floor.

Without it, you have a capable storage box. With it, you begin to have furniture.

Step 6: Fit the Lid Before Installing Anything

The standard lid measures 37 by 17 inches. Over a 36-by-16-inch body, it creates an overhang of approximately half an inch around the edges.

Place it on the carcass and adjust it by hand. Check the left and right overhang. Check the front. Then account for the hinge and any rear clearance required by the hardware.

Do not drill yet.

Mark the final position lightly, then inspect the lid from several angles. A narrow, consistent overhang makes the project feel precise. Uneven spacing will remain visible every time someone approaches the chest.

Does the lid need reinforcement?

Plywood is more dimensionally stable than a wide solid-wood panel, but it can still arrive bowed or develop a slight curve.

Store the lid flat until installation. Apply finish to both faces and all edges. If the panel flexes more than you are comfortable with, add two low-profile stiffeners underneath.

Position them so they cannot collide with:

  • The chest walls
  • The hinge
  • The lid supports
  • An interior tray
  • Stored objects near the top

Give your fingers somewhere to go

The half-inch front overhang may be all the handle you need. Keeping the exterior hardware-free reinforces the minimalist design.

If you prefer a defined pull, consider:

  • A routed underside finger groove
  • A shallow centered notch in the front panel
  • A leather pull
  • Two small end handles
  • A low-profile black metal handle
  • A recessed cup pull

Keep fingers away from the closing path and hinge area.

Step 7: Ease the Edges Without Losing the Clean Lines

Freshly cut plywood corners are sharp. They are uncomfortable against the hand and vulnerable to crushing or chipping.

A very small round-over or chamfer is enough to make the chest feel finished.

You can create it with:

  • A router and small round-over bit
  • A chamfer bit
  • A sanding block
  • Carefully applied solid-wood edging

Do not automatically round every edge heavily. Large radii soften the design and can make it feel more playful or traditional. A subtle 1/16- or 1/8-inch treatment preserves the crisp geometry while removing the harshness.

For a chest used around children, consider a larger radius on exposed corners. Remember that rounded edges address only one part of the safety question. The lid, hinge, supports, openings, ventilation, stability, and intended use still require separate attention.

Step 8: Deal With the Plywood Edges Honestly

The exposed edges will either become a feature or betray the project. There is rarely much middle ground.

Fortunately, you have several good options.

Iron-on veneer edge banding

Edge banding gives the panel the appearance of solid wood without changing its dimensions significantly.

Choose banding that matches the face veneer. Apply it according to the manufacturer’s temperature and timing instructions, press it firmly while the adhesive cools, and trim it carefully.

This works particularly well with birch, maple, oak, and walnut plywood.

Solid-wood lipping

Thin hardwood strips create a more durable edge and are especially useful on the lid, where hands repeatedly make contact.

Glue the strips in place, clamp them evenly, and allow the adhesive to cure before trimming them flush. Simple butt joints are easier than mitered corners and can still look refined when fitted carefully.

Filled edges beneath paint

If the chest will be painted, fill the exposed plies, let the filler dry, and sand the surface flat.

Expect to repeat the process. Plywood edges absorb primer unevenly, and small voids often reveal themselves only after the first coat.

Expose the layers on purpose

Good multi-ply birch plywood can have attractive, consistent edges. In minimalist furniture, those stripes become part of the visual language.

This treatment works best when the internal plies are even and largely free from gaps. Ordinary plywood with a rough, irregular core seldom creates the same polished effect.

Step 9: Sand Before the Hardware Gets in the Way

It is tempting to install the hinge as soon as the box and lid finally meet. Resist that urge.

A loose lid is easy to place flat on a work surface. A hinged lid forces you to sand around metal, corners, and moving parts.

A sensible sanding sequence is:

  1. Start with 120-grit if the surface needs leveling.
  2. Move to 150-grit.
  3. Finish with 180-grit for many clear finishing systems.
  4. Use 220-grit only when it suits the chosen product.

The face veneer may be thinner than it looks. Beginning with overly coarse paper can sand through it before you realize what is happening.

Keep the sander moving. Ease pressure near corners. Inspect the surface under low, angled light, where scratches and glue residue are easier to see.

Vacuum the dust thoroughly. Clean the surface using the method recommended by the finish manufacturer; some tack cloths can leave residue that is incompatible with certain water-based products.
