Longer benches support long furniture components beautifully.

But do not cut the legs yet.
Mock up the height.
Use a table, stack blocks under a temporary surface, or balance a board across sawhorses.
Stand there.
Pretend to plane.
Imagine chopping a mortise.
Think about dovetailing and fine joinery.
A slightly lower bench can feel powerful during heavy planing.
A slightly higher bench can feel more comfortable for close detail work.
The right height is the one that makes the work feel natural.
How Thick Should the Benchtop Be?
A top in the 3- to 4-inch range—about 75 to 100 mm—provides excellent mass and stiffness.
That thickness supports:
- Heavy hand-planing
- Vises
- Bench dogs
- Holdfasts
- Repeated flattening
- Long-term durability
But there is no prize for building the thickest bench in Scandinavia.
Every extra inch adds cost, weight, and work.
Build enough mass to make the bench stable.
Then stop.
Choosing the Best Wood for a Traditional Scandinavian Workbench
Ask ten woodworkers what species to use for a workbench and you may get twelve opinions.
Historically, European beech is strongly associated with traditional cabinetmaker benches.
It is a superb choice.
It is not the only one.
European Beech: The Classic Choice
Beech has nearly everything you want in a workbench material.
It is hard.
It is relatively heavy.
The grain is fine enough to create a pleasant working surface.
It machines and planes well.
And it has a long history in European furniture and workbench construction.
If good beech is reasonably priced where you live, there is very little to dislike.
The problem is that “reasonably priced” varies dramatically by location.
Birch: A Natural Nordic Alternative
Birch makes obvious sense in a Scandinavian context.
It can produce a durable, handsome bench and has long been part of Nordic woodworking traditions.
It is hard enough for serious use without feeling excessively brittle.
If quality birch is easier to obtain than beech, there is no reason to treat it as a second-rate substitute.
Hard Maple
For builders in North America, hard maple is an obvious alternative.
It is tough, dense, durable, and already familiar as a workbench material.
Its main disadvantage is often price.
A large laminated top can consume a surprising amount of expensive hardwood.
Ash
Ash deserves more attention than it sometimes gets.
It is strong, hard, and mechanically excellent.
If straight, dry ash is readily available in your area, it can make a superb traditional woodworking bench.
Local availability should matter more than romantic ideas about what species a “proper” bench is supposed to use.
Can You Build One From Softwood?
Absolutely.
A bench made from inexpensive softwood can still be flat, heavy, strong, and stable.
Softwood dents more easily.
That is true.
But a workbench is supposed to get dented.
A carefully built softwood bench with sound joinery and excellent workholding can outperform an expensive hardwood bench that was poorly designed.
The real question is not whether softwood is acceptable.
It is whether you want to put your money into premium timber now, or get a useful bench into the workshop sooner.
Either choice can be sensible.
Let the Lumber Settle Before You Build
A thick workbench contains a lot of wood.
And wood is never completely still.
It reacts to moisture.
Boards cup.
Edges move.
Twist appears where you swear there was none yesterday.
Bring the lumber into conditions similar to the workshop where the finished bench will live and give it time to acclimate before final milling.
Inspect every board.
Look for:
- Bow
- Twist
- Cup
- Crook
- Checks
- Large knots
- Unstable grain
You do not need flawless stock.
You do need to know what you are dealing with.
The bench begins teaching you woodworking before you have even glued the top together.
Step 1: Build the Laminated Benchtop
The top is where the project begins to feel serious.
Individual boards become a slab.
The slab becomes heavy.
And suddenly you can imagine the finished bench sitting in the shop.
Do not rush this stage.
Mill the Boards
You need mating surfaces that glue together reliably.
How you get there depends on the tools available.
You might use:
- A jointer
- A thickness planer
- Hand planes

The internal glue surfaces do not need to look like finished furniture.
They do need to meet properly.

Large glue-ups are not difficult because glue is complicated.
They are difficult because everything happens at once.
Before starting, have the entire setup ready:

- A flat support surface
- Enough room to work
Apply glue evenly and bring the laminations together.
Tighten the clamps gradually rather than cranking one clamp down completely and then moving to the next.
You are trying to create a coherent slab.
Not squeeze every molecule of adhesive out of the joint.
Watch for Twist While the Glue Is Still Wet
This matters.
A heavy slab can cure twisted.
Use cauls where useful.
Sight across the assembly.
Check the surface with winding sticks.
Correct obvious misalignment before the glue has set.
Because there is a profound difference between correcting twist during glue-up and flattening a gigantic wooden corkscrew afterward.
Step 2: Flatten the Benchtop

Not laboratory flat.

Start With Winding Sticks
Place winding sticks near opposite ends of the slab.
Sight across them.
If their upper edges appear out of parallel, the top contains twist.
Now you know where to work.
Also check the slab with a straightedge:

- Across the width
- On the diagonals
Measure first.
Remove wood second.
That simple habit prevents a remarkable amount of unnecessary work.
Flattening With Hand Planes
There is something wonderfully appropriate about flattening a Scandinavian workbench with hand planes.
Begin by removing the obvious high areas.
Plane across the grain or diagonally when aggressive correction is needed.
Recheck with winding sticks.
Refine the surface.
Work increasingly with the length of the bench as the geometry improves.
At first it can feel endless.
Then the winding sticks line up.
The plane starts taking broad, even shavings.
And the slab changes character.
What looked like a stack of glued boards suddenly becomes a working reference surface.
That moment is worth the effort.
Flattening With a Router Sled
A router sled is perfectly legitimate.
Build two rails that are straight and coplanar.
Bridge them with a router carriage.
Remove material in controlled passes.
The router will faithfully reproduce the geometry of your setup.
Which means the rails matter enormously.
Machines do not magically create accuracy.
They merely follow the reference surfaces you give them.
Step 3: Build a Base That Will Not Rack
The base does not need to be beautiful.
It needs to be stubborn.
Picture yourself planing a long board hard enough to make the shavings hiss.
Every stroke tries to move the bench.
If the base flexes, rocks, or slides, you feel it immediately.
That is why traditional benches use substantial legs and stretchers rather than lightweight framing.
Prepare the Legs
Legs somewhere around 3 to 4 inches thick are a reasonable starting point for a full-size bench.
The exact dimensions depend on the species, design, and overall scale.
Mill them straight.
Square them accurately enough for your joinery.
Do not obsess over cosmetic perfection.
These parts are structural first.
Tie Everything Together With Stretchers
Long stretchers connect the front and rear leg assemblies.
Shorter stretchers establish the width of the base and resist side movement.
This framework gives the bench its stance.
And if the joints are good, it should feel almost monolithic once assembled.
Mortise-and-Tenon Joinery: The Heart of the Base
A traditional Scandinavian woodworking bench almost begs for mortise-and-tenon joinery.
The geometry suits the forces beautifully.
A tenon on the stretcher enters a mortise cut into the leg, creating a strong mechanical connection that resists:
- Racking
- Twisting
- Pulling
- Vibration
- Repeated heavy use
Drawboring Makes a Strong Joint Even Stronger
Drawboring adds another layer of mechanical security.
A hole passes through the mortised leg.
A corresponding hole through the tenon is offset slightly toward the tenon shoulder.
When a hardwood peg is driven through both holes, the offset pulls the stretcher tightly against the leg.
You can feel the joint close.

The peg does not simply prevent the pieces from separating.

Step 4: Join the Top and Base
At some point, the benchtop and base stop being separate projects.

Think about the future before making the connection permanent.
A full-size hardwood Scandinavian workbench can become extraordinarily heavy.
That is excellent when you are planing.
Less excellent when somebody decides the workshop belongs upstairs.
If there is any chance the bench will need to move, a knockdown strategy deserves serious consideration.
Step 5: Build the Scandinavian Shoulder Vise
This is where the bench begins to acquire its unmistakable Scandinavian character.
The traditional shoulder vise looks unusual until you use one.
Then the logic becomes obvious.
Why the Shoulder Vise Works So Well
Imagine cutting dovetails in the end of a drawer side.
You need the board vertical.
You need it secure.
You also need open access around the end of the board.
Some conventional vises introduce bars, screws, or castings exactly where your saw or chisel wants to go.
A shoulder vise avoids much of that obstruction.
Its form is built around access.
That is why the design survived.
How the Mechanism Works
Traditional designs vary, but the basic principle is consistent.
A screw moves a wooden jaw against the fixed portion of the bench.
The assembly needs to be rigid enough to take considerable clamping force while still moving smoothly.
Pay close attention to:
- Screw alignment
- Jaw alignment
- Parallel clamping faces
- Clearances
- Structural support
This is not the stage for casual measurements.
A shoulder vise that works smoothly is a joy.
One that binds every third turn becomes personal.
Wooden Vise Screw or Steel?
Wooden screws look magnificent on a traditional Scandinavian workbench.
They also create a wonderful tactile connection with historical benchmaking.
Modern steel screws are easier to source, mechanically consistent, and often simpler to install.
Choose based on what matters to you.
If historical authenticity is part of the pleasure, build around a wooden screw.
If you primarily want reliable workholding, steel is entirely sensible.
There is no rule stating that using electricity and steel hardware somehow disqualifies your bench from being Scandinavian.
Step 6: Build or Install the Tail Vise
The shoulder vise holds work vertically.
The tail vise turns the top into a giant horizontal clamping surface.
Together, they are what give the traditional bench its extraordinary range.
How the Tail Vise Works
A movable section at the end of the bench carries a bench dog.
Another dog rises from the fixed benchtop.
Set the workpiece between them.
Tighten the vise.
The board is now restrained along its length while the entire upper surface remains available.
No clamp heads sticking above the work.
No complicated jig.
Just clean access.
For hand-planing, it is difficult to overstate how useful that is.
Traditional Tail Vise or Modern Wagon Vise?
Traditional tail vises can be beautiful pieces of mechanical woodworking.
They can also be complicated to build.
Modern options include:
- Wagon vises
- End vises
- Quick-release mechanisms
- Commercial screw systems
If your heart is set on historical authenticity, build the traditional version.
If you mainly care about function, a modern wagon vise can preserve much of the same workholding capability with fewer moving parts.
The underlying principle matters more than the costume.
Step 7: Lay Out the Bench Dogs Before Drilling Anything
Dog holes look simple.
They are simple.
Their placement is not.
What Bench Dogs Actually Do
Bench dogs are adjustable stops that rise above the work surface and restrain stock.
Traditional versions are often wooden and square.
Modern versions may be:
- Round
- Steel
- Brass
- Spring-loaded
- Friction fitted
- Part of larger accessory systems
All of them solve roughly the same problem.
They give the workpiece something solid to bear against.
How Far Apart Should Dog Holes Be?
Many benches use spacing somewhere around 4 to 6 inches, or 100 to 150 mm.
But do not copy that number blindly.
The spacing must make sense in relation to the actual travel of your tail vise.
Imagine a board whose length falls exactly between two dog positions.
If your vise cannot travel far enough to close that gap, the board becomes awkward to clamp.
So lay out the entire system first.
Mark it.
Measure again.
Then drill.
Dog holes are wonderfully useful.
Misplaced dog holes are wonderfully permanent.
Step 8: Decide Whether the Tool Well Belongs on Your Bench
The tool well is one of those old ideas that can still start arguments in modern workshops.
There is a reason for that.
It is both useful and annoying.
Why People Love Tool Wells
During actual work, tools multiply across the bench.
A plane here.
A square there.
Two chisels.
A marking knife.
A pencil you will soon lose.
The recessed well gives those tools somewhere to sit below the working plane.
A large board can often bridge across the top without disturbing them.
That is genuinely convenient.
Why Other Woodworkers Hate Them
A recess is also an excellent place for sawdust to gather.
And shavings.
And screws.
And random offcuts.
And that tiny marking knife you spent fifteen minutes looking for.
A tool well also reduces the amount of uninterrupted flat surface available for assembly.
Some builders eventually decide they would rather have the space back.
A Removable Tool Well Is a Smart Compromise
A removable bottom or insert gives you options.
Keep the tool well when it is useful.
Remove it when you need easier cleaning or a different arrangement.
This is a good example of how to approach the entire project.
Respect the old design.
Then make it work in your actual shop.
Step 9: Add Holdfasts and Extra Workholding
The traditional vise system is powerful enough on its own.
It becomes even more flexible when you add holdfasts.
A holdfast is beautifully primitive.
Drop it into a properly sized hole.
Strike the top.
It locks.
Tap the back.
It releases.
That is the whole mechanism.
And it works remarkably well.
Holdfasts are useful for:
- Mortising
- Carving
- Holding irregular pieces
- Securing boards temporarily
- Working against stops
- Assembly
Before drilling holdfast holes, think about where you naturally stand and where typical workpieces will sit.
The best hole layout is the one you barely notice because the holes always seem to be where you need them.
Step 10: Flatten the Bench One More Time
Once the base, vises, and major components are assembled, check the top again.
Wood moved during construction.
The assembly may have introduced small changes.
Look for:
- Twist
- High spots
- Hollows
- Uneven transitions around vise components
- Glue squeeze-out
- Raised joints
Use winding sticks and a straightedge.
Do not plane because you feel like the bench “should” be flattened.
Plane because you measured a problem.
Step 11: Ease the Edges
Fresh hardwood corners can be surprisingly vicious.
Lightly soften the edges your hands and hips will encounter.
A small chamfer is often enough.
Be cautious around the front working edge.
That surface still needs to function as a reference and clamping area.
You are aiming for comfort.
Not decoration.
Step 12: Finish the Bench Without Making It Slippery
A workbench is not a dining table.
That sounds obvious.
Yet it is surprisingly easy to spend days building a bench and then protect it so aggressively that the surface becomes too slick to use comfortably.

The top is going to be scratched.
Glue will land on it.

You may drill another hole into it years from now.

The design makes far more sense once you picture real operations.
Face Planing
Lay a board flat on the bench.
Raise a dog in the benchtop.

Raise another in the tail vise.
Clamp the board between them.
Now the top face is completely exposed.
Take a plane across it.
No clamps in the way.
No hand trying to hold the board still.
The bench simply holds it.
That one operation explains half the design.
Edge Planing
Clamp a long board along the front of the bench using the shoulder vise or front workholding system.
Support the far end if needed.
Now you can plane the edge while standing comfortably beside the workpiece.
This is where the substantial front structure of a traditional bench earns its keep.
Cutting Dovetails
Clamp the board vertically in the shoulder vise.
Bring it to a comfortable working height.
Mark the tails.
Saw.
Chop.
The end of the board remains open and accessible.
Chopping Mortises
Set the component flat on the top.
Secure it with a holdfast or another suitable method.
Then strike the mortise chisel.
Again.
Again.
A light bench announces every blow.
A heavy Scandinavian workbench absorbs them.
That calm solidity becomes addictive.
Scandinavian Workbench vs. Roubo: Which One Is Better?
This question appears constantly.
And there is no useful one-word answer.
A Roubo-style bench comes from a different European bench tradition and is strongly associated with André-Jacob Roubo.
Both designs are exceptional.
Their workholding philosophies simply differ.

If the simplicity and brute strength of a leg vise appeal to you, a Roubo-inspired bench may be the better fit.
Both survived because both solve real problems.
Scandinavian Bench vs. a Modern Commercial Workbench
A good commercial workbench can be wonderful.
You buy it.
You assemble it.
The vises are already engineered.
The dog holes are already drilled.
You can be working by the end of the day.
Building your own takes far longer.
But you gain control over:
- Height
- Length
- Width
- Wood species
- Vise position
- Dog-hole spacing
- Storage
- Base design
- Future modifications
There is another difference too.
When you build the bench yourself, you understand it in a way you never understand a factory product.
