Then you try to close four corners at once.

The tradeoff is technique. Sawing close to a line and planing an edge square takes practice. The process rewards patience more than speed.

Building the Box With Power Tools

A guided circular saw can cut panels from plywood or boards. A miter saw handles crosscuts in narrow material efficiently. A table saw becomes useful when several panels must be ripped to identical widths.

Even here, the table saw is not inevitable. If a supplier cuts the panels to width, you may only need to crosscut, drill, assemble, and finish them.

Buying prepared components can be especially sensible for a first box. It allows you to experience the assembly problem before investing in machinery designed to solve the dimensioning problem.

The Moment the Box Becomes Square

Apply only light clamp pressure at first. Then measure both diagonals.

If the diagonals match, the assembly is square. If one is longer, shift the corners gently until the two measurements agree.

Tighten the clamps in stages, moving from one side to the other. Thin pieces can bow under excessive pressure, and a heavy-handed clamp can pull a good assembly out of alignment.

Predrill near board ends to reduce splitting. Preserve drainage gaps and movement allowances shown in the plans. A generous coat of exterior finish cannot rescue a design that traps water or prevents the wood from moving.

  • Manufacturer-recommended applicator

Read the instructions and safety information before opening the container. Some oil-soaked rags can heat as the finish cures and must be stored and discarded according to the manufacturer’s fire-safety directions.
